Begami Dalaan

Overhanging the principal eastern to the Shrine or Mausoleum, there is a handsome porch known as Begami Daalaan which was built in 1643 AD by Princess Jahan Ara Begam, the favorite daughter of Emperor Shah Jahan. The walls and the beautiful marble pillars of the Begami Daalaan were done in colorful gold in 1888 AD. Later on, the ceiling of this Daalaan was also embellished in gold with the money donated by a Muslim merchant of Bombay.

This beautiful portico was used by the Begams or ladies of the Moghul harem during their frequent visits to the shrine.There are two simultaneous entrances to the Shrine through the Begami Daalaan. The doors of both of them are mounted with heavy silverplate carved in ornamental details. The tomb is of white marble inlaid with pieces of precious stones and is daily bestrewed with sandal-paste and Itars (perfumes). It is always covered with very costly  ‘Ghilaafs’ (coverings made of velvet and silk) embroidered with pleasing gold and silver tracings.

Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Hasan Chishti popularly known as Hazrat Khwaja Gharib Nawaz Ajmer , Khwaja Baba, was born in 1142 A.D. in Sijistan. His paternal genealogy is related to Hazrat Imam Hussain and that of his maternal to Hazrat Imam Hassan and thus he was a direct descendant of Prophet Hazrat Mohammad .

Over the Darbar, there is a silver ‘chaparkhat’ (canopy) inlaid with pieces of mother-of-pearl presented by Emperor Jahangir. Between the four poles supporting this `chaparkhat’, there is silver `katehra’ (railing) with an arch towards the south. There is another outer silver katehra running around the Darbar at a distance of about 2 feet. The devotees are led into this space to offer flowers and prayers over the Darbar. The ceiling of the dome is covered by a costly velvet chatgiri. A peculiar kind of fascinating aroma prevails in the shrine which inspires the visitors with a spontaneous and irresistible urge for devotion and homage towards the asleep saint. As soon as one enters the interior of the shrine, he feels as if he is in the presence of some exalted soul or mighty spiritual king.

Qadam Sharif was originally built by Firoz Shah Tughlaq as a tomb for his son Fateh Khan, but the structure has been heavily altered since. The tomb, now located in the Pahar Ganj area, was enclosed inside an irregular kot .

Within the premises of the shrine it is a gate on the western side which is opened on six days during the Urs and on first and sixth and tenth of the Islamic months of Shawwal and Zil Hijj respectively.

Gates are covered with silver metal. It is opened only four times during the year, viz. Twice on Eid’s (for one day) during the annual Urs (for six days) and on the 6th of Shawwal, the Urs of Khawaja Saheb’s Pir.

This gate too is situated on the western side of the Shrine adjacent to the darbar of Gaiti Ara. The doors of the gate are covered with silver metal. It is opened only four times during the year, viz twice on ids (for one day) during the annual Urs (for six days) and on the 6th of Shawwal, the Urs of Khawaja Saheb’s Pir.

On the west of the tomb and marble screened enclosure, the Jannati Darwaza is situated, which has silver coated shutters. It is said that whosoever performs the act of crossing the gate towards the holy tomb and then walking along the said of the marble wall emerges into the open courtyard through the exit door on the south and then continuously the walk keep to the right reaches the Jannati Darwaza and repeat the performance six times (this gate should be crossed seven times only) is sure to secure a place for himself in heaven. These seven rounds should be at one stretch.
The story goes that the great devotee the Principle Khalifa and Successor, Hazrat Shaik Qutubuddin Baktiyar Kaki R.A. who had always held the feet of his peer-0-murshid as paradise itself in an ecstatic mood granted his boon to the gate. Any one irrespective of clan, creed and faith may perform the act of crossing the Darwaza seven times in succession and reap the benefit of the efficacy of the boon.
The Jannati Darwaza is opened four times a year. The details of opening are as under �
1. From the 1st Rajjab to 6th Rajjab every year, while the Urs celebrations last.
2. On the Idul Fitar (Eid Day) from early morning to 2:30 P.M. of the day.
3. On the 6th day of Idul Fitar when the Urs Sharif of Hazrat Khwaja Usman-e-Harooni, Peer-0-Murshid of Huzoor Gharib Nawaz. The gate is open part of the day only from early morning to 2:30 P.M.
4. On the 10th of Zilhijja the Jannati Darwaza is opened from early morning to 2:30 P.M. after Zohar Prayer.

The opening and closing of the Jannati Darwaza also is under the  control and direction of the Khadim-e-Khwaja.

Buland Darwaza Ajmer Sharif

Sultan Ghiyasuddin Khilji (1469-1500) himself was a devotee of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin and it was almost certainly he who funded the construction of the Buland Darwaza, one of the ceremonial gates of the dargah, and so-called because of its great height. The Buland Darwaza is sometimes attributed to Sultan Alauddin Khilji, some refer today to it as the ‘Ala I Darwaza ‘ but this is unlikely, and is no doubt the result of a confusion between the Khiljis of Malwa and Mandu, and Sultan Alauddin Khilji of Delhi (1298-1316). Before the commencement of Urs Sharif a flag is hoisted on top of this gate with grand ceremony on the 25th Jamadiulsaani for ushering the ‘Urs’ of Khwaja Saheb, which starts from 1st of Rajab(The 7th month of lunar Calendar).

The Buland Darwaza, can, therefore, more acceptably be attributed to Ghiyas al-din Khilji. It was not only Akbar and the Khilji Sultans who adorned Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishty ‘s tomb. By the early seventeenth century the dargah was clearly an impressive establishment with a considerable staff financed by the endowments and offerings of devotees. There was already accommodation for the staff, facilities for the pilgrims’ ritual ablutions, a monumental gateway (the Buland Darwaza), at the entrance of the shrine, and a lavishly decorated mausoleum for the saint.

Wives & Children Of Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti

Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti married at an advanced stage in obedience to the directive of the Holy Prophet. He wedded twice.

First Marriage: – Garib Nawaz married Bibi Ummat-ullah and they had three kids.

Second Marriage: – Garib Nawaz second marriage was with Bibi Asmat, daughter of Syed Wajihuddin Mashhadi who was the commissioner of Ajmer in 1223. The marriage resulted in the birth of Hazrat Khwaja Ziauddin Abu Sa’id.

1. Hazrat Khwaja Fakhrudin

He was the eldest child of Khwaja Garib Nawaz he became a terrific saint as well as a scholar as well, he passed away in Sarwar town some 40 miles apart from Ajmer, his URS is celebrated on the 6th of shaban all year with great Favor.

2. Hazrat Khwaja Hissamuddin

He was the 2nd son and was also an effective saint as well, he possesses the quality of salvation, he made powerful increased for self-purification at the age of 45, and he vanished from the human eyes and joined up with non-secular fraternity.

3. Hazart Khwaja Ziauddin Abu Sayeed

He was the youngest son of Khwaja Garib Nawaz his mazar-e-mubarak is in the principle of the shrine.

4. Hazrat Bibi Hafiza Jamal

She was the only princess of Huzoor Garib Nawaz (R.A) she was of great religious identity. She advised thousands of women to the righteous way. Her mazar-e-mubarak is situated just around the mazar of Huzoor Garib Nawaz.

In this place, there are Mazar Sharif of Khawaja Baba’s Wife and this place is situated on the North side of Holy Shrine.

Big Deg

Badi Deg

It is located on the right side of Buland Darwaza inside Sahan-e-Chiragh Emperor Akbar pledged to visit Ajmer Sharif in 976 Hijra (1567 A.D.) on foot and presented a large cauldron if victorious in Chittaurgarh battle. So he kept his word after winning the battle. 4800 kg of food can be cooked in it and the cost comes to about 100,000/- Indian Rupees.

Mugal Emeror Akbar presented this large cauldron at Dargah Sharif in 976 Hijra and its size is 12.5 yards and around 125 mounds of rice can be cooked at one time.

On the western side of the Darwaza lies the larger vessel, which was donated by Akbar in Hijri 976 (1569 A. D.) During Urs, about 100 mann of rice is cooked in this vessel, alongwith dry fruits and condiments. The preparation is called Tabarruk and it is distributed amongst the destitute.

On either side of the second gate i.e Buland Darwaza in front of Sahan Chiragh (courtyard lamp),there are two huge Degs (cauldrons for cooking food)fixed into solid masonryin which a palatable mixture of rice sugar, ghee (butter) and dried fruits are cooked for distribution to the public as tabarruk.The pilgrims cook this Deg Individually.

बड़ी देग

सेहन चिराग में बुलन्द दरवाजे के दांयी तरफ बड़ी देग है। अकबर बादशाह ने अह्द (प्रण) किया था कि चित्तोड़ गढ़ की फत्ह के बाद सीधे अजमेर शरीफ हाजिर होकर एक बड़ी देग पेश करेगा। अतः उसको फत्ह हासिज हुई और सीधे अजमेर शरीफ पहुंचकर बड़ी देग चढ़ाई। इस देग का घेरा साढ़े बारह गज है और सममें सवा सौ मन चावल पक सकता है। यह देग 976 हिजरी में पेश की गई थी।
छोटी देग

यह देग सेहन चिराग में बुलंद दरवाजे के बांयी तरफ है। इसका सुल्तान नूरूद्दीन जहांगीर ने 1013 हिजरी में बनवाकर पेश किया, इसमें 80 मन चावल पक सकता है।

Huzoor Gharib Nawaz breathed his last; after achieving the command given to him by the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.). His noble soul left the corporeal body on the 6th of Rajab 633 A.H./ 16th March 1236 at the age of 97. He was buried in the same prayer room which was the center of his divine activities, throughout his stay at .

Ajmer Today his Shrine is popularly known as “Dargah Sharif of Huzoor Khwaj Gharib Nawaj . People of all walks of life and faith from all over the world, irrespective of their caste, creed and beliefs visit this great Shrine to offer flowers, Chaddar and Itar of their esteem and devotion. The rich and the poor stand side by side to pay their homage and respect to the divine soul and to acquire the peace of mind & soul to get the blessings of Huzoor Gharib Nawaz.

Ajmeri was not merely the seat of Chauhan power ; it was a religious center also where thousands of pilgrims assembled from far and near Shaikh Mu’in-u’d-din’s determination to work out the principles of Islamic mysticism at a place of such political and religious significance shows great self-confidence.

Gharib Nawaz was the exponent of the true spirit of Islam. Like orthodox and static theologians he did not engage himself in vain metaphysics but rigorously strove to save human sympathy from running into narrow grooves and struck at the very root of parochialism, casteism and religious exclusiveness which are being propagated by some vested interests. According to Khwaja Gharieb Nawaz the religion is not merely based on rituals and ecclesiastical formalities but “service of humanity” is its sole raison d’etre.

Baba Farid Chilla

Baba Farid Chilla

This underground Chilla of Baba Farid is situated on the North side of the Holy Shrine.

Just behing the Sandal Khana Mosque the Chilla (CELL or HUJRA) of Hazrat Baba Farid Ganj-e-Shakar is situated, where Baba Farid R.A. spent some time in contemplation and seclusion. The gate to the Chilla Sharif remains closed through out the year except for three days, 4th Moharram Sharif to 6th Moharram Sharif every year, when it is opened for Ziarat to all in the Chilla Sharif.

Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishty and Hazrat Khwaja Kutubuddin Bakhtyar Kaki R.A. were together in the Hujra (Cell or Chilla). Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishty said to Hazrat Khwaja Kutubuddin Bakhtyar Kaki �O Bakhtyar how much longer will you burn that young man (Baba Farid) up with Spiritual Exercise? �You must reward him with something.� Hazrat Khwaja Kutubuddin Bakhtyar Kaki answered, �What power do I have in front of you? �Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishty announced, �This is your mureed (disciple).�Then he stood up and suggested that they both gave him their blessings. So Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishty stood on the right and Hazrat Khwaja Kutubuddin Bakhtyar Kaki on the left with side Baba Farid between them, and whatever blessings they had received they bestowed on him.

The two saints have bestowed the two worlds on have received kingship from these kings of the age. The realms of both this and the other world belong to you. The entire creation in fact has been made over to you.

It is said that Hazrat Shaikh Baba Farid Ganj-e-Shakar is a descendent of Hazrat Umar Farooq-e-Azam R.A.A. the second Calipah of Hazrat Muhammed S.A.W. The father of Hazrat Shaikh Baba Farid Ganj-e-Shakar was Shaikh Jamaluddin Sulaiman who had also migrated from Ghazni. He lived and died at Patan near Gujranwala in Pakistan.

Situated behind Masjid Sandalkhana, on the western side, it is the place where the great Sufi saint Baba Farid Gunjshakar engaged himself in meditations. Its doors are opened on 5th of Moharrarn, only once in a year.

It is situated between Jama Masjid and Sandali Masjid in the premises of Hazrat khwaja Muinuddin’s Dargah at Ajmer. Along the left-hand wall, in the background of the Sandali Masjid there is a small gate which leads down to the under-ground cell in which Hazrat Baba Farid remained in a chilla (secluded prayers) for 40 days in spiritual communion with the Holy Saint of Ajmer. This gate is opened for public Ziarat (visit) on the night of the 5th of Moharram (the date of Baba farid’s death) every year when thousands of pilgrims visit the place from all over India to seek his spiritual benediction.
